- Lot Description
East Asia, China, Zhou Dynasty, ca. 1046 to 256 BCE. A cast-bronze ritual vessel known as a Gui, used for serving food. The compressed spherical body presents with raised relief decorations of avian and feline figures set among a Greek key-like border and features a pair of abstract "pig" dragon handles. A fine example covered in thick layers of green and brown patina. Size: 10.25" W x 5.875" H (26 cm x 14.9 cm)
This item has been tested using XRF technology and is made of bronze in a mixture of copper, tin, lead, iron with small amounts of zinc. This composition is consistent with bronzes from this region and this time period.
Provenance: private San Rafael, California, USA collection, acquired in 2016; ex-private Barcelona, Spain collection
