East Asia, China, Upper Yellow River Region of Gansu and Eastern Qinghai, Neolithic Period, Qijia Culture, ca. 2200 to 1500 BCE. A hand-built pottery pitcher vessel with a slightly constricted neck and a strainer or flow regulator at the spout, formed by three large holes. The pitcher features a small strap handle connecting the rim to the shoulder, and the exterior is decorated with a cord-impressed pattern that forms horizontal and slanted combed lines, typical of the Qijia culture. This textured design may have also provided better grip when the surface was wet. The Qijia culture, an ancient Bronze Age society, played a key role in the development of later Chinese civilization, particularly through advancements in bronze casting and metalworking, though their potters did not use wheels, creating these rather rustic-looking, hand-coiled pieces. Size: 6" Diameter x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA; ex-George & Julianne Alderman collection, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, acquired from the mid-1960s - mid-1990s
