**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Apache County, Four Corner region, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1000 to 1100 CE. This is a lovely Chaco black-on-white pottery bowl with a hemispherical profile and rounded but stable base. The interior is slip painted with a white ground then covered in black pigments in an interesting pattern. The thick banding form triangular outlines and solid forms with scalloped edges, which look like butterflies. Pottery played an important role in Ancestral Puebloan culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Pieces such as this bowl were made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. Size: 9.25" Diameter x 3.75" H (23.5 cm x 9.5 cm)
Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased in 2014; ex-Aaron Brady collection, collected in Apache County, Arizona, USA
