Native American, Southwest United States, Southern Colorado Plateau, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A lovely, hand-built pottery ladle presenting a thick, tubular handle with a pinched tip and a large scooping bowl. Slipped with a light gray surface, the fine implement is hand-painted with black decoration consisting of 4 pairs of horizontal striations along the handle and an abstract, cruciform motif on the interior of the bowl. Made for stirring and serving food, this example was probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 12.2" L x 5.1" W x 2.5" H (31 cm x 13 cm x 6.4 cm)
