Native American, Southwestern United States, Mogollon Rim, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A beautiful hand-built pottery mug displaying remarkable black-on-white decorations! The body is of a globular profile, resolving in a cylindrical neck with a strap handle bridging the rim to the upper shoulder. In this lovely example, the strap handle is in the form of a zoomorphic creature, perhaps representing a dog or other small mammal. The exterior surface is decorated with a mesmerizing program of abstract linear and geometric motifs including zigzags and steps extending from the base to the rim. A fabulous example created via the coil and scrape method by the Mogollon Indians of the early Anasazi who occupied the Tularosa region! Size: 3.8" Diameter x 4.25" H (9.7 cm x 10.8 cm)
