Native American, Southwestern United States, Colorado, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Mesa Verde type, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A hand-built pottery ladle of a broad form with a concave scoop, a wide shoulder, and a tapered handle with a rounded butt end. The gray-white buffware surface is adorned with triangles and spiraling tendrils on the handle as well as a central column of stripes and diagonal zigzagging bars within the scoop; the scoop's rim is outlined with a single black stripe. This artifact was made for heating and serving food, and ultimately was perhaps either deposited with a deceased individual or left in an abandoned domestic space. Repair, restoration, and overpainting to most of the scoop. Abrasions and fading to original pigment on handle commensurate with age. Nice preservation to original pigment.
