- Lot Description
North America, Thirteen Colonies or early United States of America, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ca. 1776 CE. A fabulous example of Continental currency: a 2/3 dollar bill printed on paper and issued by the Continental Congress in 1776. Designed by Benjamin Franklin, the bill displays the image of a sun dial above the "Mind your business" legend, surrounded by a circular border inscribed with "FUGIO," which is Latin for "I fly." This is intended to mean "time (sundial) flies (fugio), so mind your business (as in keep your affairs in order)." An attempt at trompe l'oeil, the image is designed to look like a metal placard that is nailed to the bill - displaying a square border with nail heads in each corner - perhaps a reference to the metal money to which the colonies did not yet have adequate access due to their lack of mints. The bill reads "TWO THIRDS / OF A DOLLAR, / According to / a Resolution of / CONGRESS / passed at PHI / LADELPHIA / February 17, / 1776." A lovely border of floral and geometric designs surrounds the bill, featuring the words, "2 THIRDS OF A DOLLAR" on the top and bottom and "United" and "Colonies" on each side. The serial number 432241 is stamped at the top. Size of piece: 3" L x 2.375" W (7.6 cm x 6 cm); Size of frame: 10" W x 6.125" H (25.4 cm x 15.6 cm)
