Ancient Greece, Late Classical period, ca. mid 4th century BCE. A fabulous cast-bronze box mirror of a circular form with a form-fitting lid on the front. The lightly-convex lid has a folded rim which fits neatly over the mirror and has a small hinge loop on top for easy opening. Centered on the lid is an intricate hammered sheet applique depicting Eros, the god of love and desire. He stands nude in composite portrait in front of a foliate-adorned altar and plumed wings, his left leg extended, holding a lyre and a cloak with his left arm, and the upper tip of his bow in his right. The mirror portion has a recessed face decorated with a 'bullseye' motif of three sets of concentric circles on the verso which would have been heavily silvered to create a reflective surface. Both lid and mirror are covered in lustrous green, brown, and russet patina, though areas of the original golden-brown bronze color is still visible. Size: 6.25" Diameter (15.9 cm).
