North America, Midwestern United States, Indiana, Crawfordsville, lower Mississippian, ca. 345 million years ago. This is an outstanding fossil formation on a gray stone containing approximately 11 different crinoid crowns and several pieces of stems! The crinoids are encased in large slate slab but excavated and raised slightly above the surrounding matrix surface - the textural ridges of stems and tentacles are nearly perfectly preserved! Several have partial attached stems that demonstrate how these creatures once anchored themselves to the seafloor. Despite this plant-like appearance and nickname "sea lily," crinoids are sea creatures that are related to starfish and sea urchins. In life, these crinoids had a mouth on their top surface surrounded by feeding arms, giving them a waving, moving effect even here, frozen in stone. Size: 20.5" L x 1" W x 9.75" H (52.1 cm x 2.5 cm x 24.8 cm)
Crinoids in Crawfordsville are highly desirable for their size, quality, and diversity of species. Many species of crinoids continue to live today, but during the prehistoric periods, they were much more abundant, and these animals would have been vibrant parts of that newly diverse ecosystem! Crinoids lived in shallow water and were often buried by sediment and silt during storms, where they fossilized. The relatively soft siltstone of the Indiana formation is ideal for excavating the crinoids and exposing amazing details from the once organic material. The preparation work that went into this piece to remove all the rock between the arms and stem sections to the level was extremely time-consuming and has yielded a fascinating display example. The preservation and natural positions of these crinoids are some of the best we have seen, with long, graceful stems and crowns raised and contrasting perfectly above the rock surface!

Professionally excavated and prepared. Two crinoid crowns near the edges of the matrix overhanging the sides are cut, showing the cross sections of the tentacles. All fossils are excavated to be slightly raised above the surface and are excellent with great preservation to details. Matrix is intact.
