Yaacov Agam (Israeli, b. 1928). "Moon-Noon (Banana)" prismograph, 2007. Numbered 67/72 at lower left. Signed "Agam" at the lower right. A Yaacov Agam prismograph comprised of color serigraph on a polymer surface with nine hand-cut, hand-polished prisms affixed to the surface in relief, set in a custom frame that was also designed by the artist - "Moon-Noon" displays Agam's mastery of Op Art and Kinetic Art. His pieces have been compared to those of Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, and Alexander Calder. Interestingly, this piece with its geometric patterns, beveled edges, brilliant colors, and mesmerizing patterns demonstrates Agam's blend of Optical and Kinetic illusions, because the imagery changes as the viewer's position changes. Size: 21.375" L x 25.5" W (54.3 cm x 64.8 cm) Size of frame: 31" L x 35.125" W (78.7 cm x 89.2 cm)
Yaacov Agam studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and also studied with Johannes Itten, a revered Bauhaus color theoretician. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, Agam was discouraged from pursuing art by his father who was a rabbi, and rather than defy the Orthodox prohibition of graven, idolic images, Agam elected to create non-objective, non-representational works that prompt the viewer to contemplate and interpret. Agam's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Jewish Museum in New York City, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City where he was honored with a retrospective in 1980. In addition, the Yaacov Agam Museum of Art opened in September of 2016 in Rishon LeZion, Israel.
An example of this work is published on page 114 of the museum catalogue, "Yaacov Agam Museum: Special Exhibition in Advance of the Official Museum Opening October 28, 2016," and was also displayed in the exhibition.
