After Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (French, 1834-1904). Bronze model of Statue of Liberty, by the Musee Bartholdi (Colmar, France), no. 84/4000. A cast bronze model of Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty by the Musee Bartholdi, Colmar, France. On the verso is a plaque which reads "Modele original de la statue / de la liberte par Bartholdi no. 84/4000 / Musee Bartholdi, Colmar, France c SLCC". Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty - inspired by Libertas, the Roman goddess and personification of liberty and freedom - was a gift to the USA from France prompted by the abolition of slavery in America. Just like Bartholdi's colossal statue which was dedicated on October 28, 1886, this model of Lady Liberty wears a crown with spikes symbolizing rays of light, raises her flaming torch to the sky, and holds a tablet inscribed with the date of America's independence from England (4th of July 1776) while broken chains of bondage lie at her feet marking the end of slavery. Size: 19.375" H (49.2 cm)
Note: A similar bronze was sold at Christie's, New York (January 23, 2015 - lot 57) for $8,750. That example was numbered 132.
