Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A lovely bronze finial of a ceremonial staff, comprised of 2 rams propped up on a central column that rises between them. The column is fit with a conical base and flared top with a horizontal, zigzag motif along the side, as well as 2 bulbs along the shaft that are adorned with incised circles. Each of the ancient rams showcases a slender body as they stand tall on their stretched out hindlegs and fold their front legs along the column. Facing forward, they both present short, round snouts, incised mouths, bulging eyes, and thick, dramatically curved horns. This lovely example is reminiscent of both a Master of Animals design and the famous depiction of rearing goats eating from the Tree of Life. Size: 3.1" W x 4.6" H (7.9 cm x 11.7 cm); 4.9" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
