Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A pretty brass pendant cast into a disc with the mythical scene of Odin and his two ravens. This Borre style of pendant is a beautiful example of Viking artistry and religion. The god Odin is holding his messengers, the ravens, around their necks, enfolding them against his chest, almost like a shield. Their wings are slightly flared at their sides and their beaks point inwards touching the sides of Odin's head. An integral suspension loop at the top turns this amulet into a wearable pendant. The birds - named Huginn and Muninn - represent thought and memory, and were the eyes and ears of Odin, bringing him news from around the world. A rich green patina covers the surface. Size: 1.35" L x 1" W (3.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
