- Lot Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A magnificent 82.9% gold (equivalent to 19K+) ring inlaid with a garnet cabochon made during the Classical Period of Javanese jewelry making- this high-quality ring was fit to be worn by the wealthy and elite! The broad stirrup shaped band gradually widens at the top, the shoulders with shallow grooves. The bezel is recessed on a flat surface, the circular lip securing the semi-precious stone. During this period, Java had a wealthy and flourishing culture – goldsmiths were highly skilled and esteemed for their artistry and mastery over metallurgy. Due to the stirrup shape the ring only measures as a US size 2.25 using a sizer mandrel but is probably closer to a US size 7.5 and is still wearable! Size of garnet bezel: 0.27" Diameter (0.7 cm); band opening: 0.69" Diameter (1.8 cm); gold quality: 82.9% (equivalent to 19K+); weight: 8.3 grams
Javanese society during this time were known for their proficiency in high-quality gold craftsmanship, alloying gold and silver to create both beautiful and durable pieces - and art from this period often depicts people wearing two rings on each hand and a ring on each foot! Javanese metalsmiths were adept at producing highly aesthetic pieces with particular alloys depending on the function of the final piece. Gold smithing was a highly regarded skill and art in Java, and the ways that gold purity was determined (rubbing on a touchstone, beating or hammering, or melting, etc.) became metaphors for human qualities and virtues.
