Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. 9th century CE. A noteworthy head of a bodhisattva, possibly Avalokitesvara, a bodhisattva figure who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas, skillfully carved from porous andesite. Shown in a deep state of meditation, the serene visage exhibits downturned eyes beneath an arched brow, a wide nose, and full lips held in a gentle smile. An elaborate headdress caps her tranquil countenance, comprised of several beaded elements forming a domed top and a lotus motif at the front center. The verso is flat and incised with a lattice design flanked above and below by horizontal striations and 4-petalled flowers. Size: 5.5" W x 13" H (14 cm x 33 cm); 15.7" H (39.9 cm) on included custom stand.
The term Bodhisattva is derived from the word bodhi which means enlightenment, and a bodhisattva is an enlightened being who foregoes entering paradise in order to assist others to achieve enlightenment or Buddhahood. Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas with graceful postures and elegant garments, this piece is no exception. This example is opulently bedecked with multiple beaded strands, grand earrings, and a magnificent headdress.

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece. Loss to nose and proper left side of upper lip. Expected surface wear with nicks, abrasions, and some softening of detail, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent.
