Southeast Asia, Indonesia, likely Java or Sumatra, ca. 9th to early 14th century CE. A large upper torso of a bodhisattva or Buddha sculpture carved from a dark gray andesite stone. Exposed to the elements and time, the surface of the porous stone has lost some finer details, but the serene face is gazing forward with a robe draped over one shoulder, elongated ears, topknot coiffure, and partial arching halo framing the divine figure. Size: 12" L x 7" W x 22.75" H (30.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 57.8 cm); 25.5" H (64.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Buddhism flourished during the Srivijaya Empire and succeeding Melayu kingdoms that ruled Java, Sumatra, and surrounding islands from the 7th to 14th century; the maritime trade routes of the "Silk Roads" created what scholars have referred to as the "grand circle of Buddhism" in Indonesia. The end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century marked the passing of this Buddhist "golden age" and the arrival and spread of Islam. Some Buddhist temples and statues were repurposed or integrated into the new Islamic cultural context, and only rarely were Buddhist artifacts deliberately destroyed. Damage to this statue is probably just from the natural passage of time rather than an iconoclasm like we see is some cultures when new religions arrive.
