Ancient Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A wonderful ungulate bone carving of a religious scene, perhaps the Resurrection, showing Christ surrounded by 4 saints, while 2 more petite figures bow at his feet. Framed by a mandorla, Jesus stands in glory, draped in a toga, with arms spread while each of the robed figures turn towards him, holding various implements in their hands, framed by 4 archways. The 2 figures furthest from Christ are separated by a spiraling column, and all is framed by a top and bottom border of repeated target motifs. Tubular in form, this example may have once been part of a pyxis, adorned a handle, or served as another attachment. Size: 1.3" Diameter x 3.1" H (3.3 cm x 7.9 cm)
