Northern Europe, British Isles, Anglo-Saxon, early Medieval period, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. Wow! A rare find! A remarkable stone sculpture of the head of Jesus or a saint from Anglo-Saxon culture. Framed by a straight, chin-length coiffure, the austere countenance presents minimalistic features, gazing outwards from sunken, almond-shaped eyes beneath a protruding forehead and arched brows. A straight nasal bridge and flat nose with slightly flared nostrils are flanked by a pair of high cheekbones that sit above a short beard and full lips held slightly open. The sacred visage is supported by a broad neck. A magnificent example of massive scale in both physicality and significance! Size: 6.75" L x 6" W x 9.75" H (17.1 cm x 15.2 cm x 24.8 cm)
While the artistic virtuosity of this sculpture is certainly noteworthy, what is more impressive is its survival capabilities. Christian art of the Anglo-Saxon era was not only pillaged by the Norman and Viking conquests, but even further destroyed by the state-sponsored iconoclasm of the Protestant Reformation during the rule of King Edward VI in the 16th century. Yet, the sculpture's ascetic aesthetic, as evident via its minimalistic facial features, long hair and beard, and lack of a diadem or any adornments, indicates the piece is certainly a religious image of the early Church. Indeed, an evocative reminder of the perseverance of art!

Condition
Likely part of a larger piece. Losses to proper upper left side of head and brow. Chips to risen areas of face, such as cheeks, nasal bridge, nose, and beard, as well as top and sides of hair. Stable surface fissure visible on verso. Nicks, scratches, abrasions, and some light softening of detail throughout, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, excellent with lovely earthen and mineral deposits.
