Ancient Near East, Holyland, Byzantine Empire, ca. 7th to 10th century CE. A sizeable copper alloy cross with inscribed Christogram on the arms, encircled Byzantine Crosses adorning each terminal, and two encircled floral motifs on the upper and lower arms as well. The circle, a deceptively simple shape, has possessed a variety of powerful meanings throughout time all over the world; however, some of these are universal. Circles represent unity, completeness, and infinity - that which is without a beginning or an end, without limiting sides or sharp corners. Each arm flares at the end and has a perforation, with chain links through all but the upper arm. A beautiful piece of religious art from the Byzantine era. Size: 10.25" W x 14.25" H (26 cm x 36.2 cm)
Byzantium was established when the fourth century Emperor Constantine, also known as Saint Constantine, Christianized the Roman Empire and proclaimed Constantinople in Byzantium as the capital. The visual culture of this era oftentimes demonstrates a synthesis of classical Greek, Roman, and Christian influences. This piece of course represents the impact of Christianity on the Byzantine Empire.
