Near East, Byzantine Empire, Islamic culture, ca. 7th to 8th century CE. A beautiful ring made from a high-quality gold shank with a fineness of 95.9% to 96.4% (equivalent to 22K to 23K+), a large garnet cabochon inlaid in the face, and a second setting on the underside of the band with an emerald! The shoulders of the ring have deep diagonal ridges and a raised row of rope-like patterning. The lower section of the shank band is angled inward and incised with scrolling motifs, the brilliant green emerald is held in a circular bezel. If this ring was not ornate enough - a gold wire encircles the garnet which may have once contained delicate pearls or beading. Wealth abounded in the Byzantine Empire and the geographical location was ideal for trade between the East and the West – resulting in magnificent multicultural creations of superb craftsmanship using some of the finest materials available! Size of garnet bezel: 0.66" L (1.7 cm); band opening: 0.65" Diameter (1.7 cm); US ring size 5; gold quality: 95.9% to 96.4% (equivalent to 22K to 23K+); weight: 14.9 grams
