Ancient Near East, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to early 9th century CE. A stunning mosaic composed with thousands of hand-cut stone tesserae depicting the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus Christ. Mary presents seated while wearing a red and blue dress with a gold and black striped belt cord as well as a blue cloak with pale yellow trim. She places her right hand gently upon her thigh while grasping the end of a slender olive branch in her left. To her right is the baby Jesus with a slender belt tied around his waist while gazing up at his benevolent mother, his left arm raised high in praise while his right touches his chest in a respectful gesture. The heads of both Mary and Jesus are surrounded by radiant coronal halos that imbue them with a venerated appearance, and the border of the mosaic is festooned with black and creamy beige checkered patterns within a fuchsia-hued periphery. Size (mosaic): 30.75" W x 39.1" H (78.1 cm x 99.3 cm); (frame): 33.25" W x 41.25" H (84.5 cm x 104.8 cm)
Mosaics (opus tesellatum) are some of our enduring images from the Byzantine world, appreciated not only for their aesthetic beauty, but also because they reveal what Byzantines chose to depict and see every day decorating their private and public spaces. They reveal everyday life, social interactions, and even things like clothing styles, personal ornament, and the interior of buildings in ways other styles of Byzantine art generally do not. This mosaic would have decorated the home of a wealthy patron of the arts, and probably formed part of a floor.
