Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE; Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 800 CE; Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A collection of 6 amulets, all skillfully hand-carved from greenstone and jade. Boasting mottled hues of celadon and emerald, the first is from Costa Rican culture and presents in the form of a squatting frog with delineated limbs and bulging eyes. The next 2 are from the Mezcala culture. They display shades of sage and olivine and exhibit differing forms: one is in the form of an anthropomorphic or simian head with sunken eyes, a wide nose, a straight mouth, an extended forehead, and sizeable, annular ears, while the other displays the shape of a striding zoomorph, perhaps a feline, with a lengthy, raised tail, a plump body, tapered legs, a protruding snout, and round ears. Size (of largest): 4.625" L x 0.75" W (11.7 cm x 1.9 cm)
Hailing from Costa Rican culture, the fourth example is flat and ring-shaped with a face in profile on one side, all enveloped in natural colors of mint and forest green. The last 2 amulets are jade pectorals and exhibit long, ovoid forms with one slightly arched and displaying shades of grey and blue, while the straighter one shows hues of light pink and cream. These are both from Tairona culture. All 6 can be suspended via drill holes.
