Northwestern Europe, England, ca. 13th century CE; Central Europe, Bavaria, present day Austria, ca. 13th century CE. A collection of 6 iron arrowheads or spear points of varying sizes and an iron knife blade. The slender knife has a single cutting edge with a pointed tip, and the tang would have attached to a handle. One of the arrowheads is a trilobate shape with a petite tang, and 2 others have long socketing shafts with petite petaloid blades. The Bavarian arrowhead is the largest, with a tubular socket that could then be mounted on a wooden shaft. This arrow may have been used during of the Battle of Marchfeld, a territorial conflict within the Holy Roman Empire between Bohemians (Czechs) and the Habsburgs (Germans). All these deadly missiles would have been able to cause damage, by piercing armor or injuring horse, leading to great causalities before the armies were ever close enough for sword combat! A dark brown and russet patina envelope the surfaces of each. Size of largest: 5" L x 0.75" W (12.7 cm x 1.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
