Ancient Seas, North America, Russia, & Morocco, Paleozoic period, ca. 541 to 251.9 million years ago. A great collection of 6 fossils from prehistoric sea creatures all contained on stone matrices. Five of the matrices contain trilobites. The trilobites on each matrix are different species including Dalmanites limulurus, Asaphus punctatus, and Flexicalymene meeki. One slate slab has 3 enrolled trilobites, a defensive stance against predators. The Flexicalymene trilobite is situated next to a fossilized bryozoan, with arms free from the shale matrix. The last fossil is a crinoid, the feeding arms are bunched together with the stem trailing behind. While the crinoid resembles a plant, it is actually a simple animal related to starfish and sea urchins. The level of preserved biological detail on all fossils is remarkable, and this is a fabulous group for any collector! Size of largest matrix: 5" L x 5" W (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm); smallest: 3.5" L x 3.75" W (8.9 cm x 9.5 cm)
