South Asia, Indian Subcontinent, ca. 5th century CE. An exquisite hand-carved sandstone sculpture depicting a bearded deity sitting cross-legged in a meditating pose on an elaborately decorated plinth. Staring out from large lidded eyes under heavy brows, the Hindu god rests his plump lips together in a petite grin under a long black moustache and prominent nose as long locks of straight black hair fall from his chin in a beard and down his back behind a headband. The tranquil divinity is heavily adorned with sizable circular earrings, a silver armband holding a pouch, a Bindi, a silver rosary bead necklace, and a yellow belt as he holds additional adornments; a strand of green rosary beads held up to his chest in his right hand and a discoid orange object in his left hand that lays supine on his lap. Excellent remains of black, white, peach, ochre, green, blue, and silver pigment can be seen throughout the red stone surface. An excellent example from the ancient Indian subcontinent! Size: 9.4" L x 12" W x 14.5" H (23.9 cm x 30.5 cm x 36.8 cm)

Condition
This piece is made of sandstone and as a result is naturally weathered with some small losses to peripheries, including the tip of the figure's nose and some on the underside. Small area of shallow surface fractures on one back bottom corner. Much of the original pigment remains on the surface, giving an idea of how brightly colored this item was when first made.
