Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Pagan Kingdom, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. This is a lovely terracotta fragment from a tablet plaque that is mold made with a depiction of the Shakyamuni Buddha seated beneath the tower of the Mahabodhi temple, flanked by the Sariputta Buddha and Maudgalyayana Buddha. Shakyamuni is the central, largest figure, seated in full lotus with his legs crossed, and hands forming the "earth witness" mudra. Maudgalyayana and Sariputta Buddha are both standing and fittingly represent Shakyamuni's left- and right-hand disciples. Above the figures are the conical, ceremonial stupas, funerary architectural monuments, that house the final remains of Buddhas. This scene captures the moment the Shakyamuni Buddha achieved enlightenment at a place that became a site of the famous Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya, India. Size: 6" L x 1.75" W x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 4.4 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.
The Mahabodhi temple is in Bodh Gaya, India, but the popularity of this sacred site attracted pilgrims from throughout southeast Asia, especially during the Pala period. Plaques were produced at the temple as souvenirs for the pilgrims, and this style of plaque was soon produced throughout the region. Many plaques have been found in the temples of Pagan in Burma, either made in the Mahabodhi style or brought there by pilgrims as offerings.
