Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An attractive group of 5 hand-built pottery figures, in varying poses and styles, all from ancient Mexico! Three are a distinct and characteristically flat form that are known colloquially as 'gingerbread' figures. The largest is a nude female, with applied shoulder nodules, necklace, earrings, and headdress, and the next is similarly formed with remains of white and black pigment. The redware gingerbread figure is the most stylized, with an elongated, conical head, and squat body. The grayware seated man has delineated legs, arms folded against his chest, and applied circular eyes, as if in a trance. The last redware seated figure is fascinating - the top of the head is hollow for firing or use as a petite jar. Turn the piece to the side, and you will see that he has a prominent hunchback. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in Mesoamerican art; they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures. Size of largest: 7.75" L x 4.75" W (19.7 cm x 12.1 cm); smallest: 4.5" L x 2.75" W (11.4 cm x 7 cm)
Clay figures like these are some of the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they made no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like these, placed alongside the walls facing inward.
