- Lot Description
Central Asia, Tibet / Nepal, ca. late 19th to mid 20th century CE; East Asia, China, Miao culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful collection of 4 necklaces comprised of nickel brass, silver, glass, turquoise, shell, and other stones. The first is comprised of a stylized lion pendant made of nickel-brass with 10% silver. The cotton thread strand is strung with an eclectic array of beads formed from ungulate bones, calcite, turquoise and quartz, and nickel-brass beads in the shape of robed figures - Buddha or bodhisattvas. The next necklace has a large disc pendant of 90% silver with 20% gold gilding on the surface. Intricate embossed patterns radiate from the center, and ovoid bezels contain glass stones in black, red, and blue. The strand is comprised of nickel-brass beads in geometric shapes and stylized fish, with orange coral seed beads, all on a modern wire with a lobster clasp. Third is a circular pendant with a blue shell or coral piece set in the center and surrounded by teardrop shaped turquoise. Above are ungulate bone beads, dyed red, and set in the center of filigree bezels. Glass dsi beads, white calcite, nickel-brass, carnelian, and turquoise beads are strung between the pendant and the chain links. Last is a nickel-brass and 12% silver lock charm with a Chinese inscription and peach charms dangling from the bottom. Lock pendants represent security and longevity, a talisman of protection. The chain is comprised of ribbed-spherical beads and chain links with a hook clasp. A great assortment of wearable jewelry! Size of largest strand: 30" L (76.2 cm); largest pendant disc: 4" W (10.2 cm); quality of silver: 90%; gold gilt: 20%; quality of silver for other necklaces: 1% to 12%
