Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE; Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE; West Mexico, Michoacan, Protoclassic Period, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A fabulous ensemble of terracotta sculptures from ancient Mexico: 2 heads from Olmec and Tlatilco cultures and 2 female figures from the Michoacan people. The largest head is from Olmec culture and displays a round visage with naturalistic eyes looking skyward, a flat nose with incised nostrils, chubby cheeks, and full lips, all flanked by a pair of annular earspools and topped with a hemispherical headpiece. Next, the smaller head is from Tlatilco culture and features slender eyes beneath an arched brow, a triangular nose, and a slight smile, all capped by a flat-topped headdress. Both from Michoacan culture, the lovely female figures are depicted standing nude, save for their broad collar necklaces, sizeable coiffures, and petite ear adornments. The taller of the two presents a voluptuous body of hourglass form with large hips, perky breasts, delineated genitalia, and stubbed arms that hang from square shoulders. Her elongated visage exhibits slanted, ovoid eyes, a petite nose, and a rectangular mouth. Last, the shorter figure is of traditional Michoacan form, presenting a huge, triangular head with incised, coffee bean-shaped eyes, a triangular nose with incised nostrils, and an open mouth. Standing upon slightly bent legs, the fine figure rests both hands atop her rotund, possibly pregnant, belly. Size (of largest figure): 1" W x 3.125" H (2.5 cm x 7.9 cm); Size (of largest head): 1.75" W x 2.125" H (4.4 cm x 5.4 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
