Native American, Midwestern United States, Hopewell, ca. 100 to 1500 CE. A fine ensemble of 4 celt pendants, all skillfully hand-knapped from stones of mottled gray, black, and cream hues and featuring annular drill holes for suspension. All of trapezoidal form, 3 of these celts exhibit axe head-like bodies, each with a narrow butt that flares out to a wide blade with a rounded, tapered edge. Alternatively, the last celt displays a form that better resembles a pickaxe head, presenting a lengthy, slender body with a heavy butt that gently narrows to a pointed tip. Size of largest: 7.8" L x 1.4" W (19.8 cm x 3.6 cm)
