Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 2500 to 1500 BCE. A charming trio of female or Venus figures, all skillfully hand-built from pottery to present stylized forms. First, the most petite figure of the group stands atop spread legs, exhibiting a minimalist form with a large head, a bulbous nose, an incised mouth, slit-form eyes, delineated genitalia, and nubbin arms held outwards. Adorned with red and black glaze, the second figure is shown from the waist up with arms folded below her voluptuous breasts, as she gazes forth from recessed eyes above an open mouth. Her shoulder-length coiffure is embellished with incised striations and capped by a slender headband. The last and largest of the group is depicted from the hips up, displaying an incised navel, full breasts, sharp shoulders, and a giant head that flares outward at the top, framing her abstract visage. Size of largest: 1.5" W x 2.3" H (3.8 cm x 5.8 cm)
The fired clay figures were produced, starting at the major Valdivian site of Real Alto, roughly five hundred years after similar ones were made in stone. Although most examples of figures like these are female, some have both male and female properties. What was their purpose? We really have no idea. However, we do know that these figures were found near hearths and food preparation areas, as well as in burials of important personages.
The 2 larger figures have been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and found to be ancient and of the period stated.
