Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Early to Late Classic Period, ca. 250 to 900 CE. A nice set of 3 hand-carved stone celts bearing sturdy forms and sharpened blade edges. First is a petite rectangular fragment carved from dark blue-green stone with slightly rough surfaces. Next is a mottled forest green stone celt with a rounded triangular body, convex faces with a pecked recess on each, and a tapered handle end. The largest celt is hewn from dark gray stone and exhibits incredibly smooth surfaces, a narrow handle, and a hefty body. Size of largest: 9.125" L x 2.6" W (23.2 cm x 6.6 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Smallest celt is a fragment of a larger tool; greenstone celt and largest celt are intact and very good. All pieces have light abrasions, with nicks to smallest celt, and tactile pecking marks to greenstone celt. Nice preservation to blade edges across all pieces.
