Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Mexico and Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE; Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A trio of hand-carved jade and greenstone pendants, each in a zoomorphic and anthropomorphic form. The first is a Colima greenstone pendant of an elongated creature, perhaps a snake. The body is straight, with a slightly ridged spine, and the other sides of the body are flat. Rounded eyes and drilled nostrils complete the head of the serpent. The next is a Costa Rican jade pendant of an axe god figure, the legs have a small delineating notch, and string cut lines create the arms and visage. The last is a circular Maya jade ornament with a protruding snake head and tail. This may have been an earspool and a wood plug would secure the piece through the central opening. A second, smaller piercing is placed through the ring below the tail. All 3 pendants are drilled for suspension and could be worn! Size of Colima pendant: 3.75" L x 0.5" W (9.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
