West Africa, Liberia, Kru (Kroo) people, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fascinating collection of 3 brass and bronze currency pieces in semicircular forms made via the lost wax technique. The first is a thick, curved band with another piece twisted around the body like a rope. The terminal tips flare slightly and create a large opening like a torq. The next is a circular band with a narrow opening and four spherical knobs protruding from the lower sides and incised grooves. The last is a broad cuff shape, decorated with scrolling geometric motifs, and seven rounded spikes. The hefty size of each ring is inconvenient to carry, let alone wear; moving one's wrist or head while wearing these would be impossible. These pieces were created originally as ritualistic objects that were traded and used as currency pieces. This is an impressive trio, for their overall sizes and forms! Size largest: 11" L x 1.675" W (27.9 cm x 4.3 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand; spiked band: 6.6" L x 4" W (16.8 cm x 10.2 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
