North America, West Coast United States, California, likely the Rancho La Brea / McKittrick tar pits, Late Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 40,000 to 10,000 years ago; Northern Asia, Russia, Siberia, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. This is a fabulous collection of prehistoric animals - 2 solidified tar matrices containing bird bones and insects, and hairs from a Siberian mammoth! The larger matrix has 2 bone fragments from a bird, excavated and protruding slightly above the rest of the tar. The other tar matrix is astounding - the preserved head of a dragonfly is visible - the unmistakable spherical eyes, part of the curved body, and crumpled wing fragments! Next to the dragonfly's head is an ovoid shell from a water beetle! The tuft of hair in the case is from a woolly mammoth - the body of the animal was miraculously preserved in the snow and ice for thousands of years. Size of larger matrix: 3.5" L x 2.75" W x 1" H (8.9 cm x 7 cm x 2.5 cm); bone: 2" L x 0.5" W (5.1 cm x 1.3 cm)
Bird bones are light and fragile, and they are less common than other fauna due to their delicate nature, but the preservation of bird remains in tar pits gives a fabulous insight into prehistoric species. The majority found in the pits are birds of prey - undoubtably attracted to other animals trapped in the tar - these scavenging birds met their own sticky demise. Obtaining intact soft tissue and hairs helps us understand much more about these prehistoric animals and to visualize how these majestic animals must have looked!
