Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine trio of hand-carved wood kris handles presenting hues of chocolate brown and espresso beneath a lustrous burnish. The first exhibits the form of an abstract, anthropomorphic torso known as a Wayang figure with an expressive visage comprised of bulging, annular eyes, an elongated, pointed nose, and a grinning mouth displaying sharp, jagged teeth. Placing both hand upon its bulbous belly, the fascinating figure wears a necklace and is adorned with intricately carved geometric designs along its torso and head. A cylindrical silver (79.6%) cap covers the base of the handle. The second kris handle features a smoothly-sculpted, abstract form, resembling a thumb, as well as a high-quality silver (98.9%) cap at its base, intricately adorned with incised, abstract motifs. The last handle showcases the form of a Brancusi style abstract avian head with a long, curved beak and incised eyes. Silver Quality: figural handle: 79.6%, abstract handle: 98.9%; Size of largest: 2.75" W x 3.75" H (7 cm x 9.5 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
The kris is both a weapon and a spiritual object. The oldest known are from the 10th century CE; they are thought to have originated on the island of Java. The bladesmith, called an empu, formed the blade from layers of different iron ores and meteorite nickel. In high quality ones, the metal is folded dozens or even hundreds of times. Traditionally, krises were worn every day as well as for special ceremonies; both men and women wore them. They were passed down through families. They were also used for display, as talismans with magical powers, weapons, heirlooms, accessories for ceremonial dress, and indicators of social status.
