Central America, Panama, San Blas Islands, Kuna / Cuna, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wonderful trio of handmade textile molas that depict colorful creatures - one presents a large bird in profile, while the other two present nearly identical hybrid creatures with bat-like heads and bodies comprised of amphibian and/or reptilian forms. The mola is a folk art form traditionally created by indigenous Kuna women. Each one in this group is quite colorful and comprised of several layers of fabrics with beautiful embroidered details as well. Three vibrant examples of this special artform from the San Blas Islands, each one set in a frame. Size of hybrid creature molas (including frame): 17" L x 22.625" W (43.2 cm x 57.5 cm)
Molas were first created about 125 years ago when the Kunas moved from the mainland to the islands. In their new environment, cooler nights necessitated warmer clothing. At first, women created blouses adorned with simple applique borders, but as time went on, they increased the scale of the decorative areas until the entire front and back panels were comprised of multi-layered, quilted textile designs. This distinctive art form has evolved into a tradition of exceptionally fine needlework and meaningful symbolism.

Condition
All three molas are in overall very good condition and present with vibrant hues and nice embroidered details. One of the hybrid creature molas is missing gallery paper on the verso and could be secured a bit better to its frame. The frames themselves have minor scuffs, but are otherwise in good condition and have suspension hardware in order to display.
