Ancient Seas, China, Middle Ordovician, ca. 470 million years ago CE. This is an aesthetically pleasing collection of 3 fossilized lituites shells within stone matrices. The fossils have been professionally prepared with the shells carved out from the matrix on three sides, making each nearly 3-dimensional. The shells of cephalopods protect the soft body tissue within and are formed by segments - each a chamber stacked atop the next forming a curl at the apex. Interestingly the planospiral coil forms first and the other chambers grow outward as the lituites grows, and the name is derived from the term "lituiticone" which refers to this type of shell morphology; coiled whorls that become uncoiled with the creature's growth! The shell material has been replaced by white quartzite (silica) during fossilization which contrast beautifully with the brown matrix. These three fossils are appealing for their coiled tip - reminiscent of the furled ferns! Size (largest matrix): 1.75" L x 0.8" W x 6" H (4.4 cm x 2 cm x 15.2 cm); (fossil): 5.6" L x 1.3" W (14.2 cm x 3.3 cm)
