**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic period, Naqada III, ca. 3200 to 3000 BCE. A fabulous set of 3 mace heads, skillfully hand-carved from alabaster displaying beautiful natural bands in hues of peach, pink, honey, and cream. Each of the heavy weapons presents a globular, apple-form body and a drilled socketing shaft into which a wooden handle would be secured. Likely mounted on a wooden pole or shaft, these examples were possibly designed for status and ceremony rather than battle. Mace heads shaped like these have been found in Naqada II tombs of both men and women, and they may have served as an indication of the deceased's authority, but little is certain about this very early period in Egyptian history. Size (of largest): 2.75" in diameter x 2.25" H (7 cm x 5.7 cm); 5.375" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.
