Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE; Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely ensemble of 3 hand-built pottery sculptures: a figure from Chupicuaro culture and a bed and whistle from Colima culture. Formed from red clay, the Chupicuaro figure is shown seated and holding his left hand to his mouth. His characteristically huge head displays large, slanted eyes and a downward-pointing nose, all topped by a sizeable hemispherical headdress. The remaining 2 examples are both blackware and from the Colima culture. The slanted bed is supported by 3 feet and topped with a blanket, a pillow, and a horizontal plank, likely used to elevate one's feet. Last, the still-functioning whistle presents in the form of a bird with the mouthpiece at its rectangular tail and the blow hole on its back. Size (of largest): 3" L x 1.5" W x 1.4" H (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm x 3.6 cm)
