Basilius Besler (German, 1561-1629). "I. Cistusflore albo. - II. Balaustium flore minori romanum - III. Cotinus (Zistrose aus Montpellier, Bluhender Granatapfelbaum, Peruckenstrauch," an original copper engraving with hand coloring from the first large folio natural history botanical entitled "Hortus Eystettensis sive Diligens et Accurata Omnium Plantarum . . .", the second edition, published in 1640 (reprinted from 1613 edition without text on verso). An outstanding depiction of three floral specimens, each one visually impressive and skillfully drawn by European botanical master Basilius Besler with hand coloring. Besler had a gift for creating rhythmic compositions and presenting images that were both informative - depicting the specimens from the roots and stems to the flowers - and visually engaging. What's more, each plant is identified by its Latin name in calligraphic text. Besler's works are widely regarded as among the most fabulous works of botanical illustration of all time.
