Northwest Pakistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A finely carved schist head of a male. Topped with thick, wavy hair, the visage of this handsome gentleman presents with a pair of almond-shaped eyes, a flat nose, sunken cheeks, and a moustache and beard comprised of swirling locks of hair. Incised horizontal striations across his forehead represent wrinkles, suggesting he may be deep in thought. The flat back on this naturalistic piece suggests that it was previously part of a relief. A lovely example from ancient Gandhara! Lucite stand in photograph is not included. Size: 1.75" W x 2" H (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
The Gandharan Empire made itself wealthy in part by controlling lucrative trade along the mountain passes between China in the East and the Near East and Mediterranean in the West; a great deal of this wealth went into local patronage of artisans and art. In the first century CE, Buddhism became fashionable amongst Gandharan elites, and the art produced at this time included some of the most striking Buddhist images from the past. Their artistic tradition also reflects the conquest of Alexander the Great and the introduction of Western aesthetics, blended into a uniquely Gandharan tradition.

Condition
Fragment of larger piece. Expected minor nicks and softening of detail with abraded area on verso. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits in recessed areas.
