Central America, Panama, Kuna/Cuna or Choco peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. Two abstract standing anthropomorphic figures standing back to back, hand-carved from caramel-hued hard wood, sometimes referred to as a "nuchus" or "nuchos." Both figures have wide abdomens with rounded shoulders, attenuated arms, and squat necks, all supported by slightly bent legs. Their heads present minimalist features, each with slit eyes, a protruding nose, an open mouth, long slender ears, and a rounded chin, all framed by a plateaued coiffure with a straight fringe of bangs. Light-brown patina envelops the pair of figures. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 9" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 22.9 cm)
The Kuna people live on a series of thirty islands in the archipelago of San Blas in the Caribbean. This is a region of high humidity, hot temperatures, and intense rains. In their traditional medicinal practice, bad spirits of illness - known as "ponis" - must be expelled from the body by a traditional medicine man called an "inatuledi." The medicine man removes the illness using nuchu - good spirits - who are represented in wooden carvings.
According to the owner of this piece, this piece was once owned by Jane Larson. The owner writes that Larson and "an Airforce Survivalist, Morgan Smith, who was teaching survival skills to the armed forces in Panama in the mid 1950s, were taken by a native Choco-culture Indian, (Antonio), by dug-out canoe to his family's remote hut. While there, Antonio presented Jane with this carving saying that it had some value/significance." Interestingly, this piece seems to be of Kuna origin. The Kuna and Choco oeoples are neighbors who have historically battled one another.
