W.C. Shotts (American 1937 - 2009), 1986, "Sitting Bull, Sioux," opal and turquoise carving titled, dated, and signed on verso. This is a fabulous hand carved cameo sculpture of the famous Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, cut from a thick slab of natural opal within the original stone matrix, inlaid with turquoise, shell, and coral by William C. Shotts. Sitting Bull faces left, his hair pulled back with a band made of turquoise shards, and an earring of nacre shell and coral set into his earlobe. He is stoic and aged, with incised wrinkles and lines besides his eyes and mouth. The opal is a milky white and a gorgeous natural color play of lilac and pale periwinkle blue with iridescent green that contrasts well against the brown matrix. Size: 4.5" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (11.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
