North American, United States, ca. mid-20th century CE; Arkansas, ca. late 20th to early 21st century CE. A trio of beautiful hand-crafted baskets of pine needles and raffia. The largest purse type is known as a Mattapoisett basket, so called due to the origins in Mattapoisett Massachusetts. The basket is woven and sewn from raffia and pine needles into intricate patterning with openwork. This example has an oval profile with a lid that is secured by an acrylic button. Two strap handles extend from the sides, and this could be a fancy summer purse. The interior is lined with a blue cotton and a vintage label for the artist "Mrs. William Wiesler." The other 2 baskets are woven by Sue and Bob Akers, basket weavers located in Arkansas. This couple utilize traditional methods with imaginative additions. The larger dish shaped piece has the tips of budding branches arranged along the edge, and a polished agate stone slab is woven into the center of the base! Size Mattapoisett: 9" L x 5" W x 8" H (22.9 cm x 12.7 cm x 20.3 cm)
Gladys Ellis (Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, 1916 to 2011) is credited with developing the Mattapoisett style of basket weaving, and she was inspired by the Nantucket basket styles. Ellis often incorporated scrimshaw bone into the lids. She gained international recognition for her creative use of pine needles and is exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (see accession number 2015.18). She taught her techniques to students in schools and weaving classes in her hometown of Mattapoisett, and likely inspired the weaver of this Mattapoisett basket.
