North America, Pacific Northwest, United States or Canada, Tlingit, ca. 20th century CE. A splendid wooden headdress in the form of a salmon adorned with mother of pearl inlay and painted brilliant hues of scarlet and cyan. Set on an ovoid plinth with leather ties for attachment, the stylized fish displays an elongated body with protruding fins, a down-turned mouth, and circular eyes. Seven nacre shell inlays present on each side of the salmon, serving as the eyes, gills, pectoral fins, and scales. Size: 13.8" W x 6.5" H (35.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
