- Lot Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Tlingit, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A superb hand-woven vegetal fiber hat with a conical brim and wooden finial with hair bristles. The hat is intended for ceremonial use during potlaches and symbolizes the Dakl'aweidi clan with the painted and carved imagery. The exterior brim is painted in black, blue, and red hues to portray a stylized orca or killer whale. The wooden finial is shaped like the whale's dorsal fin and the base is carved with a stylized visage. The fin is decorated with coarse hair tassels - likely horse or some other ungulate animal. A leather cord is sewn to the interior for securing to the wearer's head. A potlatch was a celebration that corresponded with a change in social status, such as a marriage, birth, death, or coming of age and consisted of a feast, singing, and dances. These celebrations served as a way for families to show off their wealth and the hat would mark the clan affiliation. Size: 14" Diameter x 13" H (35.6 cm x 33 cm)
