Central Asia, Tibet, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A remarkable silvered brass statue depicting a male deity engaged in tantric yab-yum with his female consort - perhaps depicting the Green Jambhala and Dakini. The male deity sits atop a tiered lotus base with his left leg kinked and his right leg panhandle as his right foot sits above a snail and lotus flower. Displaying 1 pair of arms and 1 face, he grasps a petite pagoda in his right hand and a jewel-spuing mongoose called Nehulay in his left. Both deity and consort wear elaborate headdresses that imbue them with a sense of divinity, while Dakini holds a lotus flower in her right hand. Lavish necklaces, earrings, armbands, and wristlets adorn the bodies of both deity and consort, as a spiraling sinuous ribbon swirls around Jambhala, a pair of snakes wrap around his wrists, and a towering ushnisha tops his head. The bottom cavity is sealed and stamped with a panel bearing an intricate emblem. Size: 8.4" W x 12" H (21.3 cm x 30.5 cm)
Given the presence of the seal, this statue was likely created for religious practices. When such figures are consecrated, the image is first purified in order to be deemed suitable for the inhabitance of Buddha or another deity, in this case perhaps Green Jambhala. Then the statue is invested with the presence and power of that deity. Unless it has been consecrated, a statue is not considered suitable for use in religious practices. Holy articles are likely sealed inside.
