Johannes Schiefer (Danish, 1896-1979), "Monte Carlo", oil on canvas, signed on lower right, "Monte Carlo" on lower left, early 20th century. Skillfully painted in an Impressionist style, a mesmerizing view of Monaco Harbor with Monte Carlo and its casino in the background, either at dawn or dusk given the rosy glow of the atmosphere. Schiefer masterfully draws the viewer in by including tiny staffage figures in the foreground who are taking in the beautiful scene, replete with vessels in the Mediterranean and the wondrous landscape beyond. Today Monaco Harbor is still frequently full of extravagant vessels. Just what edifices might we be seeing? One of the most memorable sights on the waterfront is the Prince's Palace in Monaco-Ville which dates to the 13th century. Saint Nicholas Cathedral is in the vicinity as well. No doubt the locale includes up-scale cafes and brasseries in addition to the famous casino. A very special oil painting set in a French provincial plaster frame. Size: 20" L x 24" W (50.8 cm x 61 cm); 24" L x 28" W (61 cm x 71.1 cm) framed
