Previously known as the San Juan Pueblo, the Ohkay Owingeh is a federally recognized tribe of Tewa-speaking Pueblo people who returned to their pre-Spanish name in November 2005. In Tewa, their name translates to "place of the strong people." The Ohkay Owingeh are noted for having continued their pottery traditions of simple, undecorated utilitarian wares regardless of the arrival of the Spanish in the late 1500s. The beautiful shapes and minimalist slipped surfaces of these vessel have captivated both their creators and collectors for centuries!
